Modern
New Canaan

New Canaan is widely known for its mid-century modern architecture. Designed by such legends as Marcel Breuer, Eliot Noyes and Philip Johson, more than 100 of these houses were built between 1949 and 1973. This visionary architecture shaped the Town’s landscape and has made New Canaan a destination for visitors from around the world.

The Society was a lead sponsor of the groundbreaking Modern Homes Survey, which identified 91 modern houses in the community and created a set of evaluation criteria. It spearheaded the effort to save the 1960 Pavilion designed by Landis Gores from demolition and now operates the Pavilion as a museum. And for more than two decades, it has offered myriad lectures, programs and exhibitions on this rich architectural history.

In 2020, it launched Modern New Canaan, an umbrella initiative to promote the mid-century modern legacy. The Museum produced Evolution of Design, a program on why New Canaan was a center for mid-century modern architecture and what made the architecture here distinctive, as well as Three Iconic Houses, a short documentary on houses designed by Philip Johson, Eliot Noyes, and Edward Durrell Stone. Both are currently available for viewing at the Museum.

Our Library contains an extensive collection of books, as well as archival documents, films and photographs on architecture and the New Canaan architects that designed in the second half of the 20th century.

Modern House Day Tour + Symposium

The first Modern House Day was on May 14, 1949. The architect Eliot Noyes chaired the committee that organized the event and the $2000 raised benefitted the New Canaan Library. The tour featured homes built between 1947 and 1949: Noyes House 1 (later demolished), The Gores House (now on the National Register), the Kniffin House (a collaboration between architects Marcel Breuer and Eliot Noyes), Breuer House 1, the Glass House, and The Rantoul House, designed by Sherwood, Mills & Smith. The idea was to showcase these fabulous new modern homes. Following the success of this inaugural tour, members of the New Canaan Community Nursery School ran Modern House Day from 1952 through 1967, and included homes built during those years by many of the originally featured architects.

The Modern House Day was resurrected in 2001 as the Modern House Day Tour + Symposium by Laura Pla for the benefit of the New Canaan Historical Society. Laura worked with Janet Lindstrom, then Executive Director. By that time, mid-century modern homes were being demolished to make way for larger houses that some considered better suited to the needs of families. Laura’s and Janet’s focus was to educate the public about the importance of these mid-century architectural gems. The first symposium featured architects Richard Bergmann and John Johansen, the furniture designer Jens Risom, and David Borglum of the builders Borglum & Meek. The public caught on, and in the years that followed, numerous mid-century moderns slated for demolition were purchased and restored

This Tour is offered by biennially.

The next MHDT+S is scheduled for October 20th and 21st, 2023.

Publications & Videos

In summer 2021, the Museum  published Landis Gores: Architecture of Konsequenz.

Written by Mark Markiewicz, AIA, it includes material from Gores’ unpublished autobiography, as well as photographs provided by the Gores family. It is the first book to take a comprehensive look at Gores’ life and work.
