    Carolyn Ivanoff, Speaker
    A Hard Road to Travel - From Connecticut to Gettysburg 1863 (17th Connecticut)

    Carolyn Ivanoff will present a lecture on this unique volunteer regiment from Fairfield County and the men's experiences. Ms. Ivanoff is an assistant principal at Shelton Intermediate School and was named Civil War Preservation Trust's Civil War Preservationist Teacher of the Year in 2003. Ms. Ivanoff will speak about the men who served with New Canaanite Private Justus Silliman who were imprisoned in the Gettysburg School on July 2nd after their wounding and capture. This program received a CHLO Award of Merit in 2011.

    Mark Albertson, Speaker
    America, Europe and The War of 1812

    Mark Albertson teaches history at Norwalk Community College for the Lifetime Learners Institute and is a historical research editor at Army Aviation magazine; he has been a member of the United States Naval Institute for more than twenty-five years. Mr. Albertson has written articles on issues of history and current events which were published in newspapers and magazines. He has also written three books: USS Connecticut: Constitution State Battleship; They'll Have to Follow You! The Triumph of the Great White Fleet, and On History: A Treatise. In 2005 both houses of Congress in Hartford presented him with a General Assembly Citation for his efforts in commemorating the centennial of battleship Connecticut. Mr. Albertson is an avid speaker, lecturing on such topics as The Great White Fleet; World Wars I & II, the Colonial Formation of Modern Iraq among many others.

    New Canaan Men at War

    Jim Bach was born and bred in the Town of New Canaan. His family dates back three generations in New Canaan to 1916. After graduating from New Canaan High School in 1947 and then from Columbia University, Jim proudly served for two years in combat during the Korean War. After the war, his career centered on Wall Street after which he retired to New Canaan with his wife, Vona. Jim's involvement with the Historical Society is all-encompassing, including many years of service on the Board, researching and lecturing on Town history, as well as teaching young students. Jim's talk will enlighten us on Canaan Parish's involvement in neighboring battles and skirmishes, and the famous and infamous soldiers involved in these events.

    The lecture series is free to members of the Society, Staying Put in New Canaan, students and Western Connecticut Navy League Council.
    Admission for all others is $10 per lecture or $25 for the series
